Editor's note

Crystal Viper keeps classic heavy metal alive in Poland

A Polish heavy metal band formed in 2003, led by vocalist Marta Gabrielczyk through lineup changes and steady album releases.

For a quick sense of their sound, try 'Still Alive' or 'The Witch is Back'. They're exactly what you'd hope for from a band called Crystal Viper.

Crystal Viper matters because they've been delivering unapologetic heavy metal from Poland for two decades, weathering real tragedy and keeping the sound straightforward. Songs like 'Still Alive' and 'The Cult' show their commitment to the genre's core energy. They're not reinventing anything, just plugging in and playing it loud.

The band started in 2003 and released their first album 'The Curse of Crystal Viper' in 2007. After guitarist Andy Kulawiak died in a 2008 car accident, Marta Gabrielczyk regrouped with new members and kept releasing records like 'Possession' and 'Queen of the Witches'. They've maintained a steady pace ever since, right through 2019's 'Tales of Fire and Frost'.

Crystal Viper started in Poland in 2003, with Marta Gabrielczyk on vocals. Their first album, 'The Curse of Crystal Viper,' came out in 2007. The band's sound pulls from classic heavy metal, with songs like 'The Cult' and 'Black Leviathan' showing their straightforward approach to the genre.

In 2008, guitarist Andy Kulawiak died in a car accident. Marta Gabrielczyk kept the band going, bringing in guitarist Mike Golyń. They've put out records fairly regularly since then, including 'Possession' in 2015 and 'Queen of the Witches' in 2017.

There was some noise in 2014 about lyrics on their song 'The Cult,' but it didn't seem to slow them down much. They released 'Tales of Fire and Frost' in 2019.
