Cut Chemist

Cut Chemist is Lucas MacFadden, a DJ who started working in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s. He developed his approach at local parties and clubs, working with turntables when digital technology was becoming more common. His style pulls from hip-hop, funk, and jazz, but he's mainly known for instrumental tracks built from samples and scratches.

He released his first album, "The Litmus Test," which set up his blend of instrumental hip-hop and experimental electronica. Later albums like "Brain Freeze" and "The Garden" from 2005 continued in that vein. The title track "The Garden" features strings over a driving beat and became a live favorite. Another track, "What's The Altitude," shows his knack for layering samples into cohesive instrumentals.

Cut Chemist has collaborated with other DJs like DJ Shadow and DJ Nu-Mark, and with musicians outside hip-hop. His work has drawn mixed reactions from traditionalists at times, but he's kept to his approach without much concern for genre boundaries. He's also done some teaching and mentoring for younger DJs, sharing techniques rather than chasing trends.
