Cut Off Your Hands

Cut Off Your Hands formed in New Zealand around 2001, starting with schoolmates Nick and Michael Allport. They eventually added bassist Phil Knight and drummer Dan Gibson to round out the lineup. The band's 2007 album 'Expectations' gave them their first real break, with the title track becoming a standout song that caught people's attention.

That album had a raw, emotional quality that connected with listeners, mixing introspective lyrics with melodic guitar work. Songs like 'Happy As Can Be' and 'Heartbreak' showed their knack for writing about personal experience without over-polishing the sound. They toured fairly extensively after that release, playing shows internationally.

Their music stayed grounded in alternative rock, avoiding grand production in favor of something more direct. Later tracks like 'Let's Get Out of Here' and 'It Doesn't Matter' kept to that approach. The band dealt with the usual lineup shifts and financial pressures that come with being an independent act from New Zealand, but they kept recording and playing for several years.
