Cuticle Tantei Inaba formed in Osaka in 1999, originally calling themselves simply Inaba. The band included vocalist Takatoshi Inaba, guitarist Kazuya Nishida, bassist Hiroyuki Ohtsuka, and drummer Hidenori Tanaka. They changed their name to Cuticle Tantei Inaba in 2003, adding the word for detective to reflect their interest in exploring emotional and relational themes through lyrics.
Their 2005 single 'Haruka, Nichijou No Naka de' became one of their most recognized songs. The track's melody and lyrics connected with listeners, though the band's sound, a mix of progressive rock, alternative metal, and electronica, wasn't always easy to categorize. Bassist Ohtsuka left in 2007, and after a break the group continued with Shota Ogawa on bass.
