Cutts formed in Bloomington, Indiana in 2001 around frontman Chris Conley. Their debut EP 'Breathe' came out the following year, with the title track becoming a notable single. The band included guitarist Ethan Jones, bassist Matt Johnson, and drummer Neil Sabatino.
They released several albums after that, including 'Looking for Summer' and 'Tarentella,' which moved into darker territory. In 2006 they put out a two-disc concept album called 'The Promise.'
Conley's lyrics sometimes addressed sensitive topics, and the band faced some public scrutiny over internal issues. They went on an extended hiatus in 2008.
