The group was led by vocalists Naldo Benny and Mr. Catra, with other members including Jorginho do Império, DJ Marlboro, and Rodrigo Minhoto. Their breakout hit "Vida Louca" became an anthem in the city's favelas, capturing a particular energy with its street-level lyrics and beats.
Their music often dealt with themes of violence, drugs, and sexuality, which drew criticism from conservative parts of Brazilian society. Mr. Catra in particular was a polarizing figure, known for his outspoken views and legal troubles. The band released several albums like "Na Batida da Favela" in 2002 and "O Som dos Graves" in 2004, building a loyal following among working-class listeners.
D21 disbanded in the late 2000s but has reunited occasionally for performances. Their raw approach to funk music helped shape the sound coming from Rio's neighborhoods during that period.
