D Rules formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 with Fábio Nestares on vocals, Fernando Magalhães on guitar, Rodrigo Penna on bass, Thiago Barata on keyboards, and Maurício Groisman on drums. They played rock and pop with Brazilian rhythms, building a following through live shows around their hometown.
Their debut album came out in 1998, and the single "Quando te beijei" became a hit on Brazilian radio.
After their debut, they released albums in 2000, 2003, 2006, and 2010. The lineup changed over time, but Nestares, Magalhães, and Groisman stayed with the band through those years.
