D4 formed in New York City around 2016 when vocalist Ali Ingle met guitarist Matthew Grant. They were joined by drummer Daniel Kopta and bassist Jesse Turley. Their debut single "Trust Nobody" came out in 2017, which helped bring them some attention with its straightforward rock approach and direct lyrics about distrust.

Their music tends to work with hard rock and alternative metal textures, leaning on melodic hooks. They followed up with an EP called "Distrust" and later a full-length album titled "Uncivilized." Songs like "Come On" and "Get Loose" show their preference for driving, riff-based tracks, while "Heartbreaker" and "Little Baby" hint at more melodic territory.

Some listeners found their lyrical focus on betrayal and emotional struggle to be stark, which sparked occasional debate about whether the tone was too pessimistic. They haven't shied away from that directness, as tracks like "Omerta" and "Feel It Like It" suggest.
