Editor's note

Da Brat, the platinum Chicago rapper from So So Def.

Her 1994 debut 'Funkdafied' went platinum and 'Da Bomb' became an anthem.

For her sound, start with 'Funkdafied' and 'Da Bomb'. Later, 'Runnin' Outta Time' holds up.

She was the first solo female rapper to go platinum with that debut, and tracks like 'Runnin' Outta Time' show her sharp, confident style. Her work with Mariah Carey and Missy Elliott kept her voice in the mix even as her career faced interruptions. The 'Funkdafied' album still sounds like a specific moment in '90s hip-hop.

She signed to Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label after catching his attention in 1992. After prison sentences in the early 2000s, she returned with albums like 'Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz' and 'Da Real Me'.
