Da Franchise & Butch Cassidy came out of West Philadelphia in the late 1990s with their debut album 'First Degree.' The record gave them a platform, and they followed it with three more studio albums over the next few years: 'Hell on Earth' in 1999, 'Sleepwalking' in 2001, and 'The Conclusion' in 2004.
Kimani Wally, who rapped as Da Franchise, handled much of the wordplay. Tariq Rankin, as Butch Cassidy, brought a smoother, more melodic flow to tracks like 'Livin' In Da City.' Their lyrics dealt plainly with street life and drew some criticism for it, along with occasional legal attention.
They kept recording through that, and their music found listeners who recognized those scenes. The duo's catalog stayed focused on their corner of Philadelphia hip-hop without much shift in direction before they stopped putting out records in the mid-2000s.
