Da Zhuang formed in Beijing in 2001, with Song Dongye as lead singer and guitarist. Their name translates to 'Big Hammer,' which fit their raw, energetic approach. In 2003, they released their debut album 'Wo Men Bu Yi Yang' ('We Are Not the Same'), which became an instant hit in China.
Their music mixed rock and punk with traditional Chinese folk elements. The lyrics often dealt with social justice and personal struggle, which sometimes put them at odds with authorities.
They continued releasing albums through the 2000s and 2010s, including 'Xing Fu' in 2005 and 'Chen Fu' in 2007. The band's lineup has included Song Dongye on vocals and guitar, Ma Wei on guitar, Xiao Ran on bass, and Wang Lei on drums.
