Editor's note

Dado Silva, from O Rappa to solo ballads

The Brazilian guitarist and singer moved from a pioneering band to personal, melodic songwriting.

For a sense of his range, listen to the band energy of O Rappa's early work and the solo ballad 'Nunca Vou Te Abandonar Meu Filho'.

He co-founded O Rappa in 1993, a band that mixed hip-hop, rock, and reggae on albums like 'Lado B Lado A'. After the group disbanded, his solo work includes the ballad 'Nunca Vou Te Abandonar Meu Filho', which became a signature song. Silva has also been vocal about social justice and LGBTQ+ rights, grounding his music in real-world concerns.

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1967, he started with O Rappa in the '90s. After a 2007 car accident inspired the song 'Deus Me Guarda', he went solo and released the album 'Novo Tempo' in 2020.

Dado Silva was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1967 and started playing guitar early, influenced by samba and bossa nova. In 1993, he co-founded the Brazilian band O Rappa with Marcelo Yuka, Nelson Meirelles, and Lauro Farias. The group mixed hip-hop, rock, and reggae and released albums like 'Rappa Mundi' in 1994 and 'Lado B Lado A' in 1999.

After O Rappa disbanded in 2018, Silva went solo and put out his debut album 'Novo Tempo' in 2020. That record included the ballad 'Nunca Vou Te Abandonar Meu Filho,' which became one of his most recognizable songs. Other tracks like 'A Saudade' and 'Eu e Você' show his continued focus on melodic, personal writing.

Silva has been open about his political views and support for social justice and LGBTQ+ rights. In 2007, he was in a serious car accident that inspired the song 'Deus Me Guarda.' He still performs and records, balancing his earlier work with O Rappa and his more recent solo material.
