Editor's note

Daft Punk's robot helmets and disco-funk revival

The French duo behind 'Get Lucky' and 'One More Time' kept their faces hidden while reshaping dance music.

If you need a place to start, 'One More Time' and 'Something About Us' tell you most of what you need to know.

They took house and disco, gave it a French filter, and made it feel new again. 'One More Time' became an anthem that still sounds fresh twenty years later. The robot helmets weren't just a gimmick, they let the music speak for itself.

They started in the early '90s with 'Homework' and 'Around the World.' By 2013, 'Random Access Memories' and 'Get Lucky' had turned them into a global phenomenon. They quietly called it quits in 2021.

Daft Punk formed in France in the early 1990s, with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo drawing from house, disco, and funk. Their debut album "Homework" came out in 1997, featuring the single "Around the World." They followed it with "Discovery" in 2001 and "Human After All" in 2005.

In 2013 they released "Random Access Memories," which included the song "Get Lucky" with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. That track became a worldwide hit. Other songs from their catalog include "One More Time," "Something About Us," and "Starboy" with The Weeknd.

They performed wearing robot helmets, which kept their identities private. The duo stopped working together in 2021.
