Background notes

Archive material and source history

Daliah Lavi was born in Haifa in 1942, when it was still British Mandate Palestine. She started as a teen idol in Israel during the late 1950s, but a serious motorcycle accident interrupted that early momentum. She recovered and eventually worked internationally, appearing in Hollywood films while continuing to record music.

Her recordings from the late 1960s and early 1970s show a singer comfortable in different styles. She had German-language hits like 'Ich will den ganzen Regenbogen' and 'Ich glaub an die liebe,' which were popular in Europe. The 1969 album 'Circe' is often mentioned as a particular point in her catalog, though her earlier work from the mid-1960s, such as 'Per Questa Notte,' also found an audience.

Lavi performed mostly as a solo artist but worked with other musicians at times, including the French vocal group Les Compagnons de la Chanson. Her later recordings, like the 1971 album 'So Near and Yet So Far,' continued in a similar vein of European pop and chanson.
