Background notes

Archive material and source history

Dalton Vogeler was a Brazilian band that formed in the late 1960s, taking cues from the tropicalismo movement that was reshaping the country's music at the time. They came out of Salvador and mixed samba and reggae with psychedelic rock, which wasn't always an easy sell to more conservative listeners. For a while they played small clubs and underground spots, working out what they were doing.

Their first album, 'Amendoim Torradinho,' came out in 1972. The title track caught on and gave them some national attention, though not everyone was comfortable with their style. They kept putting out records through the 1970s and into the early 1980s, like 'Maçã do Amor' in 1974 and 'O Grande Circo Místico' in 1978.

Their sound pulled from Brazilian rhythms but ran them through a psychedelic filter, and songs like 'Balada Triste' show that side of their work. The band's core included Dalton Vogeler himself on vocals and guitar, along with percussionist Carlinhos Brown and vocalist Neguinho do Samba.
