Editor's note

Damn Yankees: A late-'80s rock supergroup with hits

A short-lived project that brought together Tommy Shaw, Ted Nugent, and Jack Blades for some radio-friendly hard rock.

For the full picture, listen to 'High Enough' and then something like 'Piledriver.' It shows the range they were aiming for.

They landed a genuine rock radio staple with 'High Enough,' a power ballad that still gets airplay decades later. The combination of Shaw's melodic sense and Nugent's guitar work created something more accessible than either's solo work. Songs like 'Come Again' and 'Piledriver' show they could do straightforward rockers too.

They formed in the late 1980s and released their self-titled debut in 1989. After the 1991 follow-up 'Don't Tread,' the project mostly went quiet until a surprise third album in 2019.
