Dan Mangan + Blacksmith is an indie folk band from Vancouver that formed in 2003. The group includes Dan Mangan on vocals and guitar, Kenton Loewen on guitar and vocals, Drew Jurecka on cello and vocals, Gordon Grdina on bass, and John Walsh on drums. Mangan and Loewen met as teenagers in a music program before starting the band.
They've released five studio albums, starting with 2009's "All Together Now" and most recently 2023's "Being Somewhere." Their 2011 album "Oh Fortune" and 2018's "Unmake the Wild Light" both won Juno Awards for Album of the Year. Songs like "Mouthpiece" and "Forgetery" show Mangan's writing style, which tends toward introspective lyrics about personal and social themes.
In 2020, the band faced criticism for using Indigenous imagery in a music video, which they addressed with an apology. Their music continues to explore various subjects while maintaining the folk sound they developed in Vancouver.
