Archive material and source history

Dan Nakamura, who records as Dan The Automator, is a San Francisco-born producer who came up in the late 1980s and early '90s. He first gained wider attention around 1990 when he teamed up with Prince Paul to form the group Shadowboxin'. Their debut album, 'Blazing Arrow,' blended hip-hop with funk and jazz elements.

After Shadowboxin' ended, Nakamura worked with rapper Del the Funky Homosapien on the concept group Deltron 3030. Their self-titled album arrived in 2000. Around that same period, he released a solo album called 'A Much Needed Break' in 1999, which included the track 'Buck Buck' featuring Poet. That song, along with others like 'I Want Da Mic' with Kool Keith, became staples in certain hip-hop circles.

His production style often involves layering samples and crafting beats that feel both inventive and slightly off-kilter. He's kept a relatively low profile compared to some of his peers, but his work from that late-'90s and early-2000s period continues to have its listeners.
