Dario was a freestyle group that formed in the early 1980s, with Dario on lead vocals, Jack Ramirez on keyboards, Tony Mercedes on bass, and Troy Taylor on drums. They put out their self-titled debut album in 1981, which included the song 'A Broken Promise.' That track became their best-known work, a slow, moody ballad that fit right into the freestyle and dance-pop sound of the time.
They followed up with a few more albums over the next several years, like 'Dreamers' in 1983 and 'Doin' It' in 1985. The group had some internal disagreements and lineup shifts along the way, and they also ran into legal trouble over song rights that made it harder for them to keep recording and performing. Their music stayed mostly in the freestyle lane, though they tried a Latin-tinged direction on 1987's 'Tropical Night.'
Aside from the legal issues, Dario also faced accusations of using racially insensitive language in some of their lyrics, which caused a bit of a stir. The group never really broke through to a huge mainstream audience, and they eventually faded from the scene. You can still hear 'A Broken Promise' and another track, 'Dreams In The Night,' on freestyle and '80s dance playlists every now and then.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
