Dark At Dawn formed in Finland around 2005, with vocalist Pekka Kokko and guitarist Jussi Ylikoski at the start. They've put out five albums, including 'Darkness Descends' in 2006 and 'Wolves Among Sheep' in 2018. Their songs often have titles like '(A Sleep) In a Watery Red' and 'At The Frozen Lake of Bliss', which fit the band's moody, atmospheric metal sound.
Their lineup has included Tapio Kangas on guitar, Pasi Pasanen on drums, and Fredi Harju on bass. Bassist Timo Kauppinen was part of the band until his death in 2017. The group kept going after that, with Harju joining later.
One of their better-known tracks is '(A Sleep) In a Watery Red' from the 2010 album 'In the Shadows'. It's a slower, haunting piece that shows their melodic side, with Kokko's vocals over layered guitars and keyboards. They've stayed with this general style across their records, working in symphonic touches and heavy riffs without shifting too far from their core sound.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
