A London trio built on Elena Tonra's low voice and lyrics that handle heavy feelings plainly.
If you want to hear what they do, start with Youth or Medicine. They frame the band's whole approach in a few quiet minutes.
Songs like Youth and Medicine from their 2013 album If You Leave caught attention for how they talk about doubt without getting sentimental. Their sound doesn't really change shape, it's built on that same gray, patient space, with tracks like Smother and Landfill sitting in it. They've stayed a three-piece making slow, serious indie songs that don't try to lift you up.
Daughter formed in London with Elena Tonra on vocals and guitar, Igor Haefeli on bass, and Remi Aguilella on drums. Their first album, If You Leave, came out in 2013, and in 2016 they released Not to Disappear, which kept the same spare, echoing sound but felt more inward. Tonra also made a solo record under the name Ex:Re in 2019, which was quieter and more stripped back than the band's usual work.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
