Dave Baxter formed his eponymous band in 1984, drawing from the raw energy of London's punk scene. The group's debut album, 'The Shadows We Dance In,' came out that same year. Their song 'Whispers' became particularly well-known, appearing on their 1987 album 'Whispers from the Edge.'
Over time, the band's lineup shifted. Original guitarist John Smith was replaced by James White in 1988, and bassist Mary Jones left in 1992, with Sarah Green taking over. The core of Baxter, White, Green, and drummer Tom Brown carried on through subsequent releases like 'Echoes of the Night.'
Baxter's lyrics often touched on themes of alienation, which sometimes drew criticism. The band maintained a steady output without dramatic commercial claims, letting the music speak for itself. Their work from that period remains what it is: a series of rock records from a specific time and place.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
