Dave, Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich formed in London's East End in 1964. They were a six-piece band with a lineup that included Dave Munden on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Dee Murray on bass, Dozy Beaumont on lead guitar, Beaky Davies on drums, Mick Wilson on keyboards, and Tich Richardson on vocals and percussion. They signed with Fontana Records in 1965.
Their debut album came out that same year, but it was 'Last Night In Soho' in 1966 that really broke through. That song, along with others like 'Hold Tight' and 'The Legend Of Xanadu', gave them a string of hits that mixed pop, rock, and a bit of folk into something catchy and straightforward.
They built a reputation on energetic live shows and tunes that were hard to get out of your head. While some critics at the time dismissed them as too lighthearted, their music found a solid audience. The band's name alone made them stand out in the crowded 1960s scene.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
