Archive material and source history

Dave Dudley was a country singer with a deep baritone voice who became known for songs about truck drivers and the open road. His 1963 recording of 'Six Days on the Road' became an anthem for that world, though it's worth noting the existing history says he wrote it as a teenager and it later became a hit for Poco, which seems like a mix-up since Poco's version came later. He recorded for Capitol Records.

Some of his other songs include 'Gotta Travel On,' 'Jack Knife,' and 'Tulsa Telephone Book.' 'It's Such A Pretty World Today' was another of his well-known tracks. His music often dealt with themes of travel and working-class life, and he had a run of hits through the 1960s.

He was born David Dwight Prowse in 1928 in Spencer, West Virginia, and his father played fiddle. After serving in the Korean War, he worked jobs like truck driving while trying to make it in music. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1993 and died in 2003.
