Dave Maclean came out of Scotland with a handful of songs that found an audience. His 2002 single "We Said Goodbye" broke through, its straightforward melody and direct lyrics connecting with listeners in a way that felt personal rather than grandiose.
He put out a few albums in the years that followed, including The Road Less Traveled in 2004 and Echoes of a Broken Heart in 2007. Songs like "Me And You" and "Tears" kept to that same plainspoken style, built around his voice and unadorned arrangements.
There was a legal dispute with his label around 2009 that caused some trouble, but he kept working afterward. He recorded with a few other musicians, including David Gilmour and Phil Collins on occasion, though most of his material stayed centered on his own writing.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
