Archive material and source history

Dave Pirner formed Soul Asylum in 1981 with guitarist Dan Murphy, bassist Karl Mueller, and drummer Grant Young. Their debut album 'Say What You Will... Clarence... Karl... Bob...' came out in 1984, and they built a following on the alternative rock circuit with a raw, infectious sound.

By the early 1990s, Soul Asylum had become a household name. The song 'Faces and Names' from 1992 became their defining anthem, with its haunting melody and introspective lyrics about loss and remembrance.

In 1996, guitarist Dan Murphy died in a car accident. The band struggled but eventually returned to the studio. Soul Asylum continued releasing albums through the 2000s and 2010s, including 'Never Recover' and 'Teach Me To Breathe,' evolving their sound while maintaining their blend of introspection and rock energy.
