David Assayag was born in Casablanca, Morocco, and grew up with Sephardic Jewish musical traditions. He moved to Brazil in his early twenties, where he began incorporating local rhythms like samba and bossa nova into his work. His song "Índio do Brasil" came out in 2005 and became widely known for its celebration of Brazil's indigenous heritage.
His debut album, simply titled "David Assayag," was released in 2003. Later records included "Terra Brasil" in 2008 and "Mundo Novo" in 2014. Other songs in his catalog include "Tempo de Trapiche," "Vermelho," and "Aquarela da Amazônia."
He has performed with musicians like Brazilian percussionist Carlinhos Brown and French singer Véronique Sanson. In live settings, he's often joined by his brother Ron on bass and drummer Renato Santos.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
