David Axelrod

David Axelrod was a composer and producer from Los Angeles who started as a session musician in the 1950s. He formed his own label in 1967 and released his debut album "Songs of Experience" that same year. His work often featured orchestral arrangements mixed with soul and jazz elements.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Axelrod collaborated with artists like Lou Rawls, Eddie Harris, and Cannonball Adderley. Albums like "The Soulful Strings of David Axelrod" from 1968 and "Songs of Innocence" from 1970 represent his approach during this period. He worked with various musicians including drummer Larry Bunker, bassist Ray Brown, saxophonist Harold Land, and pianist Joe Sample.

While Axelrod's music found critical appreciation, it didn't achieve mainstream commercial success. His production work extended to Elvis Presley's 1972 version of "Always On My Mind," which became a global hit. Over time, his recordings have been sampled by hip-hop producers and referenced by other artists, though he remained somewhat outside the commercial spotlight during his active years.
