David Coverdale was born in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, England, in 1951. He joined Deep Purple in 1973, singing on albums like "Burn" and "Stormbringer" before leaving the band in 1978.
After Deep Purple, he formed Whitesnake, which had hits like "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love" in the 1980s. One of his songs from that period, "The Last Note of Freedom," came out in 1990.
He also recorded solo material, including the 1978 album "Northwinds" and a 1993 collaboration with Jimmy Page called "Coverdale/Page."
