A Texas church singer whose classical voice carries from hymns to original songs.
For the full range, start with "Holy (Sanctus)" and then listen to "Just As I Am." That'll give you the picture.
Phelps brings a formal vocal training to contemporary Christian music that you don't always hear. You can hear that classical quality in his version of "O Holy Night" or the original song "Holy (Sanctus)." It's a voice built for big rooms and big feelings, whether he's singing with the Gaither Vocal Band or on his own.
He started singing in church in Tomball, Texas, then joined the Gaither Vocal Band in 1994. After going solo in 2000 with "Life Is a Church," he kept recording through vocal cord surgery in 2005 and albums like "Revelation" and "Hymnals." These days he tours with a band that includes Mark Lowry.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
