De Elegasten formed in the Netherlands in 1982 with Annemarie de Bie and Heleen van der Laar on vocals, Wouter Planteijdt on guitar, and André Kemp on double bass. They worked with traditional folk material like ballads and lullabies, putting out their first album "Van Harba Lorie tot Al die willen te Cape varen" in 1984.
Their sound leaned on those intertwined vocal lines over guitar and bass, heard on songs like "Harba Lori Fa" and "'t Is goed in 't eigen hart te kijken." They kept recording through the early 1990s, releasing "Morgenster" in 1993.
At times their approach to folk drew some criticism from traditional quarters. They also did some collaborative work with outside groups, including the theater company Baal and the dance ensemble Rosas.
