De Frente Ao Mar formed in Brazil in the late 1980s, taking their name from the Portuguese phrase for "Facing the Sea." The group included Vinicius Cantuária on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Guto Goffi on electric guitar and vocals, Marcelo Costa on bass, and Bruno Reis on drums.
Their self-titled debut album came out in 1989, featuring the track "De Frente Para o Mar." They followed it with albums like "Quadro Vivo" in 1992 and "Olhos de Sereia" in 1996.
Vinicius Cantuária left the band in 2000 to work on solo material. After his departure, the other members kept performing and recording as De Frente Ao Mar.
