De Kift

De Kift formed in Rotterdam in 1998 around frontman Sven Figee, with guitarist Elger Vermij and bassist Tjeerd Bomhof. They built a sound that mixed folk and rock with something more experimental, never quite fitting into a single category. Their early work drew some criticism for being abrasive, but they kept at it, developing a loyal audience who appreciated their refusal to compromise.

Figee's lyrics became a central part of their identity, tackling everything from love to the absurdities of modern life with a dark sense of humor. The song 'Alleenstaande Ledematen' is a good example, telling a disquieting story about isolation and physical vulnerability over a haunting melody. Other tracks like 'Beguine' and 'De Dis' show the range of their musical palette, from more structured pieces to looser, atmospheric work.

They were often described as provocative, both for their lyrical content and their theatrical stage presence. Over time, Figee's writing was recognized beyond music, gaining notice in Dutch literary circles. The band's catalog, including songs like 'Berooid' and 'Blauwgras', documents a group that operated on its own terms, building a distinct sound from Rotterdam's port-city energy.
