De Kleine Zeemeermin formed in 1986 with Tineke Schoemaker on vocals, Menno Spaans on guitar, Cees van den Bosch on bass, and Henk van den Bossche on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1988, and the track 'Dat Is Mijn Wens' became a hit in the Netherlands.
In 1992, Schoemaker's breast cancer diagnosis paused the band's work for a time. They returned with albums like 'Liefde, Haat & Hoop' in 1995 and 'De Eeuw Van De Zeemeermin' in 1998, though these didn't reach the same commercial level as their early material. Van den Bosch was arrested for drug possession around 1998, which affected their public standing.
They put out seven albums total, including 'Zeezucht' in 2002 and a compilation 'De Eerste 10 Jaar' in 2006. Schoemaker's voice and Spaans' guitar work defined their sound, a mix of pop and folk elements that kept 'Dat Is Mijn Wens' familiar on Dutch radio long after its release.
