De La Calle formed in Buenos Aires in the early 2000s as a cumbia band. Their song "Una Wacha Piola" became popular locally, painting a picture of a clever young woman getting by in the city. The group included vocalist Patricio "Pato" Fontanet, guitarist Rodrigo "Malevo" De Castro, bassist Diego "Chaparro" Rammsy, and drummer Andres "El Negro" Vilanova.
Their music mixed cumbia with rock and electronic touches, and their lyrics often dealt with ordinary life and social issues. Other tracks like "Me Extrañarás" and "Te Odio Y Te Extraño" show their range with love and heartbreak themes.
In 2011, a performance at a Buenos Aires stadium led to a fatal accident involving two fans. The band took a break afterward. Fontanet and Rammsy faced drug charges in 2013, which brought more attention. They eventually returned to playing shows.
