De Nieuwe Wereld formed in 2000 with Thomas Acda on vocals and guitar, Jeroen den Boer on bass, and Leonie Meijer on drums. Their early sound drew from American folk and indie rock, with Wilco and Elliott Smith as touchstones. They released their debut album 'Lost in Translation' in 2002.
The band maintained the song was meant to raise awareness rather than glorify the subject. Acda left in 2011 to pursue solo work, with Den Boer and Meijer continuing as a duo and adding guitarist Timo de Hoop and keyboardist Sebastiaan Pot.
