Archive material and source history
Deck Rock Blues formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1970s, drawing from American and British rock as well as blues and surf music. Their original lineup included Gilberto Gil on lead vocals and guitar, Liminha on bass, Tavinho Paes on drums, and André Jung on guitar and vocals.
They released albums like "Pessoal do Sul" in 1978, "Deck Rock Blues" in 1980, "Rádio Pirata" in 1983, and "Cada Dia" in 1985. Their song "A Primeira Pedra" became something of an anthem, with its straightforward rock energy and lyrics that spoke to a younger audience.
In a fairly conservative musical climate at the time, their style and sometimes political lyrics drew some criticism, but also built them a following. Other songs like "Canção Aos Humildes" and "Heróis da Vida" kept to that mix of rock drive and plainspoken themes.
