Deep Purple formed in 1968 from the remains of Episode Six and Searchers, with Rod Evans on vocals and Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. Their early sound mixed hard rock with progressive touches, and their debut album in 1969 included the singles "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman." Evans was replaced by Ian Gillan, and the band's lineup solidified with Jon Lord on keyboards, Ian Paice on drums, and Roger Glover on bass.
In 1972, they released "Machine Head," which featured "Smoke on the Water," "Highway Star," and "Pictures of Home." That album brought them international attention. Gillan and Blackmore left in the mid-1970s, replaced briefly by David Coverdale and Tommy Bolin, whose death in 1976 led to the band's temporary breakup.
The classic lineup of Gillan, Blackmore, Lord, Paice, and Glover reunited in 1984. They recorded "The House of Blue Light" in 1987, which included the song "The Cut Runs Deep." After another hiatus in 1989, Deep Purple continued with various members, releasing albums like "Purpendicular" in 1996 and "Whoosh!" in 2020.
