Deepcentral formed in Manchester in the early 2000s with brothers Jim and Dan Stevenson and vocalist Zoe Durrant. Their sound pulls from Motown and electronic dance music, though they've never fit neatly into one genre. Their debut album was called 'The Distance Between,' followed by 'The Surface of the Sun' and 'Seasons.'
Their song 'Cry It Away' became a breakout hit, built around raw vulnerability and an insistent melody. Other tracks like 'Hey Girl' and 'In & Out' follow a similar pattern of emotional lyrics over danceable rhythms. Jim Stevenson's voice carries most of the weight, with Dan's guitar work and Zoe Durrant's backing vocals filling out the arrangements.
They've faced some criticism for blending styles, but kept making the music they wanted to make. The band's catalog is mostly about relationships and feelings, delivered with enough pop appeal to keep people listening.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
