El truhán había aparecido
todo de verde vestido,
como se trajean los grillos,
a más que llegó brincando
y bajó el camino
cantando el aire de un estribillo.
Se quitó su gorro viejo
y haciendo una caravana,
dijo inmodesto el tipejo
lo que más le vino en gana.
O sea que era y se decía
el Conde Bruno del Breñal,
quién aparecía a nosotros
en su forma original.
Y entre muchas otras farsas
y afirmaciones confusas,
dijo ser hábil artista,
que dejó su noble cuna
por ilustrar al imbécil...
por enselar al jumento.
Que ignoró fama y placeres
por llevar a donde fuere
la luz del conocimiento.
-De ignorancia nadie muere -dijo-,
pero el saber da un talento
más útil que la belleza.
-Así es - grité-,
en la cabeza te faltan
los dos ejemplos.
A lo que me concedió:
-¡Verdad es! Lo sé de fuentes
más nobles y más altivas.
La sabiduría es un don...
pero no del que la sabe,
sino del que la cultiva
-dijo y se avivó de pronto--
-Esto me recuerda un cuento
que les cuento porque es corto
-mintió el redomado loco
y empezó con aire grave-:
para todo aquel que sabe,
como si esto fuera poco...
