Delia Fischer

Delia Fischer came up in Porto Alegre, where she sang in a local choir as a teenager. Her debut album 'Canta Brasil' arrived in the early 1990s, but it was the follow-up that really connected. The 1994 album 'Passarinho' gave her a title track that became something of a standard, a ballad about a bird in flight that people still hum.

She worked in a space between traditional Brazilian forms like samba and bossa nova and more contemporary pop arrangements. You can hear that blend in songs like 'Blues de Acabar' and 'Água e Vinho.' Her voice had a light, clear quality that suited both the delicate moments and the bigger swells.

Later on, she recorded 'Flor da Noite' with Ana Carolina, another singer who moves between genres. Fischer's catalog isn't huge, but it has a few songs that stuck around in the Brazilian songbook, the kind that get covered or remembered years later.
