Delmo Biuford was born in Jacuípe, Bahia in 1939. In the 1970s, he formed the group A Cobra D'Água, which took its name from their debut single. That song, 'Cobra D'Água,' became widely known in Brazil, drawing from Afro-Brazilian rhythms and his own percussion and vocal style.
He released other albums like 'Cavaleiro da Lua' and 'Pérola Negra,' and his recordings include songs such as 'Rosa da Praia,' 'Aldebarã,' and 'Cartão Postal.' Biuford worked with musicians including Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso at times, and his band featured Jaime Costa on guitar, Ney Caxias on drums, and Zelito on bass.
His music was sometimes met with criticism and accusations related to mysticism, which contrasted with its popularity in some communities. The sound he helped create remained part of Brazilian festival playlists long after.
