A Rio-born singer whose ethereal recordings explore faith through songs like 'Livro Bendito' and 'Foi No Calvário'.
For a good sense of her approach, try 'Livro Bendito' from that first album. 'Foi No Calvário' shows the spiritual direction she kept exploring.
Denise's voice has that particular quality people call haunting, especially on tracks like 'Pequeno Nome' and 'Quero Estar Contigo.' She kept writing spiritual songs even when some religious groups questioned that direction. 'Livro Bendito' from her 1979 debut 'Voz' became her most recognizable song, and she followed it with others like 'Conversando com Deus' and 'Tocou-me.'
She started singing professionally in the mid-1970s with the experimental group Arapuca. Her first solo album 'Voz' came out in 1979, followed by 'Solo' in 1984 and 'Lua' in 1991. She worked with musicians including Zé Renato on guitar and vocals, and percussionist Paulinho da Costa.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
