Depth Beyond One's formed in the early 2000s with members who came from notable Norwegian black metal backgrounds. Varg Vikernes handled vocals and guitars after his time with Burzum, Fenriz played drums from Darkthrone, and Gaahl contributed vocals and bass. Their debut album 'A Human Decay' arrived in 2005, followed by 'Hymns of the Occult' in 2008 and 'Beyond the Threshold' in 2012.
Their music pulled from black and death metal traditions, though they weren't strictly bound to either. Songs like 'A Shrill' and 'Grand Lapse' showed their tendency toward heavy, atmospheric arrangements. By their third album, they'd begun incorporating some doom and progressive elements into that foundation.
The band's lineup brought with it certain associations that followed them. Vikernes had a history with white supremacy and had served prison time for murder, which led to accusations of neo-Nazism toward the group.
