The Desperados formed in California in the early 1960s, originally calling themselves the Tall Riders. The group included Don Reynolds on guitar and vocals, Collin Pruett on guitar and vocals, and Billy Ray Reynolds on bass. They played a mix of Western themes with some rock and roll elements.
In 1965, they released their self-titled debut album which featured "(Ghost) Riders In The Sky." The song was written by Stan Jones and tells a story about ghostly cowboys on an endless ride. It became their most recognizable track, though they also recorded songs like "First Blood," "Devil's Horse," and "Dodge City."
They put out a few more albums in the late 1960s, including "Way Out There" in 1966 and "Comin' Home" in 1967. By the early 1970s, the band had gone through some lineup changes and their sound shifted a bit.
