Deva Premal

Deva Premal was born in Nuremberg, Germany, and started out as a classical singer. She met Miten, who had studied sitar and tabla, at a meditation retreat in Rishikesh, India in 1990. They began working together on what they called sacred music.

Their first album, "The Essence," came out in 1998 and included what would become their best-known recording, the Gayatri Mantra. They followed it with albums like "Love Is Space" and "Soul in Wonder." Their songs often use Sanskrit verses and simple instrumentation, with tracks like "Om Namo Bhagavate" and "Jai Radha Madhav" becoming familiar in yoga studios and meditation spaces.

In 2005, there was a copyright dispute over their use of the Gayatri Mantra, which they successfully defended as a transformative work. They've continued recording, with later albums including "Dakshina" and "The Heart of the Universe."
