Dez Dickerson came up in Paterson, New Jersey, where he started playing guitar early and formed a band called The New Dells as a teenager. In the early 1980s, he joined the new wave group Q-Feel, whose sound mixed rock, funk, and soul. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1984.
That album included the single 'Modernaire,' a synth-driven track that got some attention. Dickerson played guitar on it. The song has a dance-rock feel with a prominent bassline and his guitar work running through it.
After Q-Feel, Dickerson kept working as a musician. He's known for that one song more than anything else, but he was active in that period when rock and R&B were crossing over in interesting ways.
