Dinossauro formed in Porto Alegre in the early 1980s with Carlo Pianta on vocals, Kleiton Ramil on guitar, Nei Van Soria on bass, and João Barone on drums. Their 1984 track 'A Galope' became a national hit in Brazil, built around a galloping rhythm that gave the song its name. The band's sound mixed rock with Brazilian rhythms from the start.

Carlo Pianta remained the constant member through lineup changes that included guitarist Luiz Carlos Maluly, bassist Julio Reny, and keyboardist Edgar Scandurra. They put out a 20-year anniversary album in 2004 called 'Dinossauro 20 Anos.'
