Archive material and source history

Diocletian formed in 2003 when guitarist Brian "Brew" Mason and vocalist Alex Poole started playing together in Canada. Their early years saw frequent lineup changes, but they kept working on a raw black metal sound that eventually solidified with the addition of Al Henderson on guitar, Bart "The Butcher" Szabo on bass, and Jonathan Athon on drums around 2007.

They released their first album "Gesundrian" in 2007, followed by "Doom Cult" in 2012 and "Darkness and Cold" in 2017. Songs like "Beast Atop The Trapezoid" and "Cleaved Asunder" became staples in their catalog, built around heavy guitar work and Poole's intense vocals.

The band's lyrics sometimes drew criticism for their dark themes, but their straightforward approach to the genre found an audience. They kept recording and playing shows without much fanfare, maintaining the same core lineup for over a decade after those early changes settled.
