Archive material and source history

Dios was a heavy metal band that formed in Los Angeles in the early 1980s. The group was led by vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who had previously been in Rainbow and Black Sabbath. He was joined by guitarist Vivian Campbell, bassist Jimmy Bain, and drummer Vinny Appice. Their debut album, "Holy Diver," came out in 1983 and quickly found an audience with its mix of aggressive riffs and melodic hooks.

Songs like "Runaway" and "Darkroom" from later albums showed the band's knack for blending fantasy-themed lyrics with straightforward metal energy. They put out several more records in the 1980s, including "The Last in Line" in 1984 and "Dream Evil" in 1987. The music leaned on Dio's powerful vocals and Campbell's detailed guitar work, with Bain and Appice holding down a solid rhythm section.

Some listeners at the time questioned Dio's move away from Black Sabbath, and the band's focus on mythological themes wasn't for everyone. But they kept a steady output through the decade, building a catalog that included tracks like "My Inner Demons" and "Betrayal." Their sound didn't really fit neatly into any one metal subgenre, which gave them a distinct place in that era's scene.
